Mesotherapy: Side Effects

Mesotherapy side effects are not severe, which is why mesotherapy is considered to be one of the safest body contouring procedures. There are no documented deaths associated with mesotherapy side effects. However, you should be informed about the possible side effects when choosing mesotherapy as an alternative to liposuction.

  • Bruising at the injection point is the most common side effect of mesotherapy. Your doctor may recommend you to use special creams or supplements and wear lose clothes to reduce bruising. Remember: it is not recommended to undergo the next series of injections before bruising is gone. That is why you should always follow your doctor’s instructions for minimizing bruising and swelling.

  • Skin infections. Although the possibility of skin infections in the US clinics is eliminated due to strict laws, the cases of skin infections caused by mesotherapy done by non-medical professionals in unsanitary conditions at salons and bathrooms are quite common in other countries, Brazil for example.

  • Pain. Mesotherapy is done my the means of very thin needles which reduces the pain to minimum. Some patients experience slight short-term discomfort and burning when the injected substance begins to burn fat. If you have a very low pain threshold you may be given an anesthetic prior to the procedure.

  • Some patients experience numbness in scattered areas after mesotherapy, which dissolves in a few days.

  • Slight itching which lasts only a few hours after the procedure.

  • Slight swelling at the injection. Painless, dissolves in a day or two.

  • Skin discoloration at the injection area which resolves by itself.

Allergy may occur in patients who have intolerance to certain injected substances. Consult with your doctor on this issue to make sure none of the allergens are included in the mesotherapy “cocktail”. Mesotherapy side effects occur in different patients differently. You should discuss with your doctor the possibility of side effects before you decide on mesotherapy.
